Default New alarm

I'm shopping around for a new alarm. But I can't seem to figure out which one I want. I will be installing the alarm myself, so keep that in mind as well. $150 is the budget... and it'* strict. I've narrowed it down to these units. I'm sure operation-wise are all good, and reliability wise is fine... it'* more feature wise and install wise.

Autopage 725LCD $95 1/4mi range
Autopage 860LCD $135 1/2mi
Viper 791xv $145 1/4
Viper 790xv $125 1/4?
Clifford matrix RSX3.5 $145 1/4

The autopage is more DIY based than the others... and I believe the autopage has all the relays built into the brain itself, versus the viper and clifford which you have to wire the relays outside the box? I'm sure some of you BC members out there have these alarms. And I'm also sure there are some DIY installers out there too.

Stereo is coming shortly. Alarm first, obviously. I'm more worried about people getting in the car, than getting the car itself. They're usually too dumb for that around here.

Bandit: That list is mainly shortened to my price range and what'* available. The cliff and vipers are refurbished. That'* why they are in my price range

haro: the car runs smooth, but all the bugs aren't worked out. Still not getting full timing advance.... i'm working on it.. first thing, get the right 3.33 ECU.

they have a new viper alarm system out with farther paging/remote start features you might want to look into that if you want the upgraded version of the 791xv

The upgraded version isn't $150 though. That is over $200 IIRC. Not to mention they probably won't have a refurbished one, which is why the old 791 is so cheap.

I prefer installing DEI (ie. Viper, Clifford, Sidewinder, etc) because in my opinion they are the most thought out units from start to finish, particularly with the programming. The Viper 791 and Clifford 3.5 are basically identical units, the case on the remote and color of the LED being the most obvious differences. I like the fact the Autopage unit has integrated relays, less bulky when prepping the wiring, but in the end its really not that big of a deal. If you're doing the install yourself, I'd try to read through the install manuals online and get a feel for whatever you think you'd be more comfortable with.

I have the 860LCD. The range is awesome. I can park in the middle of the Wally World Parking lot, and still get the temp readout from the cash register lines. The antenna module is small, lined up with the edge of it at the edge of my palm, the tip of the antenna doesn't reach the tip of my fingers. I posted it up behind the rear view mirror, and the cable was long enough to reach to the driver'* side of the headliner, down the A pillar, under the dash and over to the empty space under the stereo/ac. I have a 2005 SE.

Installation was normal, if you've ever installed a remote starter before, it'* easy. All of the relays are onboard, except for the starter kill. Everything plugs into the 'brain'. Like other brands I've seen, the installation manual has a large diagram that shows what each wire does, along with a full description of each throughout the booklet.

The remote has a key lock function, which is good with my 3 year old around, now she can't remote start the car. It has a back light on it, but while it'* on, if you press another button it turns off. So I can turn the back light on, but if I try to read the temp from the car, the light goes off. That seems odd to me. You can bypass the shock sensor from the remote, good for stormy nights.

If you have any issues with it though, Autopage might not help you. I sent an email asking for some information and, while the person that replied was very nice and hinted at the answer, he stated that they cannot help non dealers for liability reasons.

I've tried to cover alot, but I know you will have more questions, so ask away.

Jeff
