How hard to install Remote Start/Keyless/Alarm??? - GM Forum - Buick, Cadillac, Chev, Olds, GMC & Pontiac chat

Audio (and aftermarket electronics) This is your place for alarms, remote starters, to brag about your system, exaggerate your db levels, or simply ask questions for stock or aftermarket audio. No Flames! (except from roasted amps)

Default How hard to install Remote Start/Keyless/Alarm???

I bought a combo off of EBAY for pretty cheap. I have the VATS bypass as well. My only concern is the difficulty involved in installation? I have gotten a quote of $100 installed for everything, but I really hate paying that much. Opinions, suggestions, and tips are welcome.

Simple. Get your wire colors/locations before you start.

depends on the car I guess.. On mine.. no way would I ever attempt it. I looked at their wiring job they did on my car and holy good god. There is no way I would have attempted it. I can't even see where half of the wires go!

yah i did and boy was it crazy well, it was a lot of wiring for all the extras, remote start, trunk release (requires extra relay), underlighting demo mode turn on (requires extra relay), and of coarse the essentials like lights flashing (which was a pain to remove light switch and wire it in), lock and unlock, shock sensors and stuff like that. my vats bypass didn't work, it never learned the resistance(it was a bulldog) so i just gave it up and returned it and am going to have to wire in resistors (maybe you will have better luck than me on the vats bypass). all in all i think it was worth it for me because i spent $250 instead of $500. you may want to have an extra car on hand just in case you need to make a run for electrical tape or anything else while you are working on this. what model of alarm are you getting? it is not super hard to wire all of this stuff in if you have your colors of your wires and definately read up on the manual. if you have any more questions feel free to ask. Good Luck!

Hmm, well a buddy of mine offered to install it for $100. He owns his own car audio shop. I think the $100 is worth it. I will try to help him, so I know what I am doing next time.

Typical install for a remote start/alarm/keyless system would be around $200 (thats what Best Buy charges). The vats bypass would be another $35 or so. Anything else would be extra. So $100 a pretty good savings, especiially if he warranties the work. Depending on the year of the car, it could be a simple install, to a huge pain in the a$$ install (2000+). If you've never done it before, I'd say pay for professional installation. It'* not worth the headaches.

even when I took my car to Best Buy I had to take my car in 3 seperate days for them to finish it! I think it took them more than 8 hours of labor to complete it! They had a lot of trouble with the stock anti-theft system from starting the car. (even after getting the VATS bypass working.) Then everytime I'd start the car the alarm would go off.. another problem I had to take it to them for. They hadn't done a car like mine before so by the time they were done with it they said they didn't want to do another. haha. They said it was easily the worst car they had worked on before.
