Headlight Mod Question

Is anyone aware of a mod to the headlights where as you install some sort of balast and change the headlight bulbs to make the low beams a sort of blue colour and much brighter? I believe the brand is Hella. Does anyone have the cost and time associated with the mod.

This has to do with a Mod Mick is attempting.

1993 SLE 09-09-2007 09:24 PM

ya there are a few options

1. you can do a Projector....this requires MAJOR modification, and will not work well with your headlights because of the glass design

2. Install Sylvania Silverstar Bulbs. these are a great option. I recently just uipgraded my low beams from the 9006 to the 9005 for the low beams....

Thanks for the reply 1993SLE but this question is specific to the Hella Ballast type blue bulb mod. As it stands now he has installed them with my permision. My question now is, does anyone else have that mod do I can compare notes?

BillBoost37 09-10-2007 10:52 AM

Frank..any pictures or the model of the kit ?

Mickman 09-10-2007 11:23 AM

Right now I'm at school so I can't grab the box to check.. But I know the brand is Hella and it is a 8000K HID kit.

My Bad, I forgot that Mick frequents this forum......................Hi Sonny Boy.

Mickman 09-10-2007 11:38 AM

I always gotta check up on the forum

You're suppost to be in class Mick. If your instructor finds out you're on this forum................cachange! :bazooka:

mmm HID bulbs in halogen housings. I hope you enjoy getting flashed by other drivers and having poor visibality.

Mickman 09-10-2007 11:56 AM

I've been flashed by other drivers only once so far.. but my visibility is not bad at all. I still have the Hi-beams so I can always use them if I REALLY need it.

Maymybonnieliveforevr 09-10-2007 12:00 PM

The high beams are angled differently then the low beams and as such will go into the eye's of the oncoming drivers more so than the low beams. In other words, the high beams are more widespread then low's.

Mickman 09-10-2007 12:04 PM

I have noticed that the HIDs are aimed a little too low. I asked the auto shop teacher today and he said that they could be aimed a bit better.

Here are a few pictures of the box and ballasts. Mick has asked this question in another thread but hasn't received any replies so I'll ask here. Right after the installation, the headlamp monitor came on in the DIC. That usually indicated that there is a burned out headlight bulb, well there isn't. Anyone have this problem after installing HID's or does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

Thanks

that's because HID bulbs pull 35 watts when on and regular HL bulbs pull 55 watts when on. (each) No wonder it says they are blown huh?

got a picture stright on of the ballast? almost looks like a fake repo from that angle.

Maymybonnieliveforevr 09-13-2007 04:03 PM

I'll try to get a better picture of the ballast when Mick comes home from school. I hope we can fix this since I hate having that headlamp display on in the DIC.

either pull the display bulb out, put the legal halogen bulbs back in, find some massive resistors, or live with it.

Maymybonnieliveforevr 09-13-2007 04:11 PM

I don't want to pull the bulb out, and I read that there was some drilling into the back of the headlight to acomidate this instalation so I don't know if the old bub will go back in. I don't know what massive resistors are........so where does that leave me?

massive resistors would basicly consume the missing 20 watts of power per side that is missing when using HID bulbs.

leaves you with dealing with it or uninstalling.

Maymybonnieliveforevr 09-13-2007 06:38 PM

I don't like either one of those options. Has anyone else ever encountered this same problem. We can't be the only one's that have installed Hella HID conversions in a Bonneville.

John Deere Boy 09-13-2007 08:59 PM

Find some 20 Watt bulbs, wire them in parallel with the HID kit, and hide them somewhere where they won't shine. This is equivelent to the resistors Corvettecrazy mentions. fuddyduddy121 installed an HID kit, but i don't think it was hella. search for his posts.

edit...here http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...er=asc&start=0

Maymybonnieliveforevr 09-13-2007 09:39 PM

Thanks for the link John Deere Boy and although I believe I read all 3 pages of posts I don't think I saw mention of him encountering the DIC Headlamp warning problem. When I saw the interior night picture I didn't see the warning in the DIC. Did he indeed encounter that problem, if so can you direct me to that particular post please.

I understand the principal of hiding 2-20watt bulbs to trick the DIC into believing they are 55 W instead of 35 W, but do you think that may be the only solution to this problem?

John Deere Boy 09-15-2007 07:44 PM

A resistor or other type of load is the only solution i know of. I drove around for two years with my lamp monitor on and driving me insane until i figured out it was the license plate bulbs. (that was before the bonneville club existed)

Maymybonnieliveforevr 09-16-2007 08:45 PM

I understand the principal of installing a 20 watt bulb in line before the ballast , since the ballast is only capable of supplying 35 watts. Does anyone know what the number of the bulb that has a rating of 20 watts and doesn't supply a lot of heat so as to have the capablilties of burning objects close by?

I prefer the suggestion of a resistor, since this resistor that you would be talking about doesn't actually create light but only draws 20 watts. Is that correct John Deer Boy? Can you elaborate more on the resistor principal please?

popatim 09-16-2007 09:54 PM

I gave you a link in Micks thread.

John Deere Boy 09-17-2007 09:45 PM

After reading papatim's link, i'm less sure that wiring in a resistor will work because if the DIC measures resistance while the lights are off, then a resistor in parallel will decrease resistance (we need to increase resistance), and if the resistor is wired in series, it will cause voltage drop to the ballast. I previously assumed the DIC measured current draw while the lights were on.
