Dual Voice Coil Speakers (DVC)
Is it necessary or even beneficial to use both coils or can the same performance be had by using only one. I understand it gives you more options as far as wiring for series and parallel and lowering or increasing your total impediance just wanted to get some other input.
You should always use both coils. Your power handling will be halved if you only use one coil. It also changes other specs of the speaker like motor strength and inductance.

make sure you match up the total end resistance with the maximum power at X resistance your amp can put out.
You need to power both coils, the benefit of DVC is wiring options. an SVC and DVC setup on the same amp and same load will sound the same, but DVC makes it much easier to setup to your needs. It works best with multiple drivers running on one channel (ala Subwoofers). Not much use for DVC in speakers often.
DVC isn't to be confused with dual drivers that may be independantly wired. DVC is two sets of terminals on one motor assembly.

So what'* considered to be the impediance of a 2 ohm DVC speaker? Just 2 Ohms?
Or 4ohms since there'* two 2ohm coils. I'm trying to figure out the final load of 2 speakers with DVC wired in Parallel. Not sure what to go with though dual 2 ohm or dual 4 ohm. My math says the dual 2ohms would yeild a final load of .5ohm. While the 4ohm coils would give me a load of 1 ohm. Is that right?

this should answer all your impedance calculation questions
