Does anyone have poor AM reception? - GM Forum - Buick, Cadillac, Chev, Olds, GMC & Pontiac chat

Audio (and aftermarket electronics) This is your place for alarms, remote starters, to brag about your system, exaggerate your db levels, or simply ask questions for stock or aftermarket audio. No Flames! (except from roasted amps)

Default Does anyone have poor AM reception?

My 90SE has always had next to no AM reception. The power antenna works (it goes up fully and retracts completely). I just can't figure out why I can't get AM stations. Rarely when I get AM its signal is so faint all I get is static.
Does anyone else have this problem, and what is the fix?

Well change it to FM...

Actually i don't know if the power antennea is used for both FM and AM. I have an aftermarket radio but i get great AM reception. I have a power antennea as well.

I do usually listen to FM but I like listening to AM for the traffic reports to get me home more quickly.
Someone once told me that the antenna is strickly for FM reception only.

i heard that AM signals are pretty heavily affected by power lines. and in Montreal im sure theres at least one or two of those

AM is more prone to any kind of interference. Correct me if I am wrong, but the AM waves are linear and are affected by blocking by buidlings, geographic features etc, where as FM is more dynamic.

The only reason AM is not coming thru must be due to multiple kinds of interference.

The only time I listen to AM is when I listen to the George Noory Show (used to be Art Bells show before he retired) and I always have clear signal. No complaints here.

Maybe your AM tuner in your radio is fryed.. Ive had that happen before in my old T-Bird. I suggest maybe swaping in another radio just to check... I am sure a parts yard would let you...

I have a 90 as well and the AM reception is for crap. My theory is this. The antenna cable has a break in it somewhere. A strong FM signal will come through even without an antenna (try it, unplug the cable and tune in). I think this is because of the smaller wave in te FM band. Which means that the FM is coming in because you have some antenna'* cable (from the radio to the break) but the AM needs all the cable and the antenna for complete reception. I've had four different rados in it and AM has sucked in all of them. I just never thought of buying a new cable until about a month ago.

How much does an antenna cable go for. You must be right because my delta royale has next to no AM reception as well. Even though its antenna does not go up I get excellent FM reception. Thanks for the info.

Remember that you could have a problem anywhere from the antenna itself all of the way to the radio. You can use a multimeter to check resistance across different parts of the system. I just put a new antenna in a couple of weeks ago, and in the process discovered that parts on the antenna were loose. Reception is much better now.

Sometimes aftermarket accessories can cause problems too. Also a bad ground at the radio can cause problems.

You may want to check each of the connecting points. There may be one under the dash towards the right side. I've never tracked all of them down.
