Default different head unit other then Bose???

Hey, have been doing some reading up on the audio archives and have seen a few posts that have said that the Bose head unit is really unswapable unless you doing abunch more then just head swap, or swapping with another Bose head unit, the car I just bought is a 99 SSEI with the Bose system, but the Bose head unit was replaced with a head unit NON BOSE out of a 200or 2002 chevy Hd pickup, qand the head and everything works with the steering wheel controls and everything but the CD player is unoperable, also, the bass is really unbarable, even with it al the way down, wondering why this is working in the car at all when it isnt supposed to. he said he never touched a thing other then the head unit........ I am going to be replacing this unit, and am sure Im going to go with another Bose init, but just curious if this hurt anything??? sorry to Ramble.......
thanks
