Default Busted Steering wheel controls

Hi ppl,

My uncle just gave me his 93 Bonni SSE and it has the steering wheel controls (sweet option! ) but half the buttons do not work for me (due to use)... does any one know how to dissasemble the steering wheel so i can look at it? Is this a common problem and can be fixed by someone else w/o spending an arm and a leg? I would like to keep this contol and the Stock radio b/c it is working fine with my RF modulator connected to my computer (mp3 box.. i'm a nerd with that crap) and would like to have control of the mute, power, scaning stations etc etc etc...

Thxn for all your advice and help. Timmmay

If you have an aftermaket deck with an IR remote you can still use your steering wheel controls check out http://www.go2pac.com/products/swi.htm it is only a three wire hook up, I have had in for over a year and have never had to reprogram it. I ordered it from crutchfield for $65. After not having the controls before I put it in and then finally getting them back I would never do with out them again. I put the IR beam in the shift boot so it aims right at the radio but is still out of sight.

92-95 Steering wheels controls are a poor design. Improve them or repair them with the Techinfo article.

For some reason GM wasn't smart enough to figure out how to make the Steering wheel controls work until the mid-late '90'*. The Steering wheel controls are definately a sweet option, but they just wear out so easily on the older ones. On our '90 TGP, it has steering wheel controls, and they only work half the time, either all of them work, or none of them work, but it has like 20 buttons so it looks cool. But since GM figured out what they were doing, the controls in our '00 SSEi and '02 GTP work great!!! (knock on wood)

I fixed mine. That'* why I wrote the article. I did it because the SWI-X is a pos, and you need the buttons working anyway. I GAVE my SWi-x away for free. Don't waste your money on it.

My steering wheel controls still work great.

that'* weird, what kind of problems were you having with it? I only mention it because I haven't had any problems and considering the local shop wanted $150 for some other adaptor it seemed like a good value. But if people are having problems with it that'* not good, and I'd hate to recomend something that doesn't work 100%
