Default 2002 SSEi with Monsoon Question

Hey all, just got a 02 SSEi with the Monsoon system. After market DVD player installed by previous owner has killed my OnStar and chime. Don't really care though. What I do care about is how the stereo sounds. I'm pretty sure one if not both 6x9s are blown. I'm having trouble finding replacement Monsoon speakers so I'm just gonna go after market. I'm gonna go with some 4-ohm ones since they are a good bit cheaper than the 2-ohm kind, and I plan on getting rid of the Monsoon stuff ASAP anyway and running new amp and wiring.

But, for the time being, what do y'all think of these?Kicker DS6930 6" x 9" Speakers Car Speakers Car Audio Car Audio, Video, & GPS Navigation - Sonic Electronix

Also, how do I make sure the rest of my speakers are working like they should? They work, as in I can hear them, but it doesn't sound as clear as my wife'* car or my truck that I used to have (07 Avalanche non Bose).

Haven't seen any of the audio gearheads on here today. Send a PM to Black_Friday including a link to your thread (open your thread, copy the address from the address line, paste it into the PM and it will create a link) and I am sure he will get you what you need. If you don't hear anything within a reasonable time, enter a new post into your thread saying "bump please" and we will jump all over it.

Sorry for the delayed response. I work third shift now and I had a wedding to go to so as soon as I got home I slept and as soon as I woke up I went to the wedding... but enough about me.

In regard to checking if speakers all work, Do you have a balance and fade? If so, I would isolate each speaker and play some musically dynamic cd'*: rap, rock, country, radio... You will notice any differences you hears. Now as for 2 to 4 ohm speakers, you could run some infinity kappa speakers. They are 2 ohm and if you run 4 ohm speakers on an amp made to produce its greatest output on a 2 ohm speaker, the new ones may be quieter than your factory speakers. Lastly Kicker speakers, You will always be unhappy when you begin a this vs. that debate. So many different areas in the country perfer so many different brands. If you talk to a guy in colorado, they may so go with boston acoustics. If you ask a guy from newyork he may say cadence, the best advice I can give you is, do your research, compare the speaker sensitivity because the higher the number the louder it will get with less effort. Try to look on the internet and see what coaxials are being talked about the most, and last but not least look at the price point. In car audio you get what you pay for... If you are looking for a speaker that you have to go through so much effort to install, pay shipping for, and have to listen to everytime you drive, do not hesitate to pay more to get more. If there is any way I can further help you, let me know

Ok, so how would I wire up an aftermarket speaker like those Kickers to my current setup? I know the Monsoon'* have a 4 wire instead of a 2 wire setup.

The system will be converted away from Monsoon little by little, starting with the rear 6x9'*, then maybe the front doors, then rear doors, then a new 4-ohm amp to complete the conversion.

are you sure your current set up is 2 ohms? I actually think they are an odd ball number like 3 if so you may not notice a huge loss of sound. As for the 4 wires, Is there a seperate tweeter next to the speaker? I believe that the second set of wires is for that tweeter. You dont want to hook that up. Just look in the trunk and you should be able to differentiate the one for the other

Oh, I don't know that it'* 2-ohms. I was just reading in a different forum that the Monsoon system is a 2-ohm system. Also I have no idea about if there is a tweeter in the back or not, since they are the 6x9'* that I'm gonna be changing first. I know the 6x9s were supposed to be "subwoofers" or whatever. I do know however that they are both toast because I faded the system to the rear and I heard the highs/mids from the rear doors and nothing but a bunch of popping coming from the rear deck.

Yeah that is typical cone failure. Try to look under the rear deck and see if you can figure it out but once you pull of your rear deck, you should see them

I think I was wrong about the 6x9'* having a 4 wire connection, after looking at them I think it'* a 2 wire. Here'* a pic so you can see and tell me if I'm wrong or right.

Also, this is what I discovered when I went to look at the amp.

Cut wires and the harnesses weren't even plugged in. So I took out the amp. I'm assuming what the person did was find out which wires powered which speakers and ran new wire. If that'* true then I shouldn't have a problem with new 4-ohm speakers right? Also I don't think they got the rear 6x9'* isolated right, because when I fade to the rear, sound still come out of the tweeters in my A pillar.
