Default tranny shifting hard

I was driving down the road and all of a sudden the tranny started to shift hard. All the shifts you could feel, 1,2,3,4. Here is the strange part!! I pull in to get some gas, and then start the car a go and the problem is gone? Any info on what has happened. Since then it has not done it again. I have a 2000 SLE

I would suggest to get your transmission fluid flushed. Not just changed! Because places that just change the fluid only replace about 4 quarts and leave the rest of the old fluid in there. Get it powerflushed and all the fluid replaced. Don't forget a new filter. A Tranny Cooler wouldn't hurt either. If there would be a tranny cooler on all of the automatic cars out there they would last a lot longer with a lot less problems.
Heat is the number one killer in an automatic transmission.
Keep it cool....

Depending on how many miles are on the car, I would not recommend a flush. Instead I would do 2 changes about 500 miles apart. Each change will be about 8 quarts and between the 2 should get most of the flud changed out and revitalized. Flushing the trans that has high miles and has not been changed regularly (every 25k miles) can be detrimental to it. Change the filter on each change.

Thanks for all the replies, I had the fluild drained and a new filter put in, and the guy said that it was very clean(no metal parts in the fluid) and that it might be a sticky shifter valve or solinoid that made it shift hard. He also thought that by adding a tranny cooler would definately help out with the longivity of the transmission.
Thanks again

Mine does that too after a good 100 miles of driving. It might just be a sensor inside the tranny.

had that happen, too. I had to have the valve body replaced. It only happens when the car warms up to 200 or so. Anyways, it cost me over $2000 to get the entire tranny redone.

if you change the fluid early it'* not going to hurt anything. I say go for it if you want to. I have 39k on my car now and will probably change the transmission fluid and filter this spring.
