Default Tranny? Noise?

Today I took a 3 hour ride and towards the end of the drive my as it shifted through the gears it was rough and made a klunk sound. THrough gears 1-3 at least. When I was runnning at speed and gave the accerlerator a quick light pump it would klunk evertime. I got home let it set for a few hours and took it for a drive and could not get it to do it again. Any thoughts?? thanks

1) check tranny fluid for level, odor, and appearance(color) then report back what you find. Also look extra close for any signs of metal on the dipstick.

tranny fluid is read , diesn't really have a smell, and it it wasfuller than the fill line. I check it with the motor off and engine cold. As far as metal when I wiped the stick on a towel it left a grey mark but I think it came from the dip stick, i put the stick back in and pulled it out again and did not get the same grey mark. thnks

Look in your owner'* manual for the correct procedure to check tranny fluid level.

It sounds like your fluid is ok. At this point if it keeps up you will want to get the car scanned or get a filter and fluid change or both. I would definitly get this taken care of my car shifted rough on just a few 3-4 shifts before I realized fouth gear was gone, now I need a rebuild. I would recomend having it scanned at a shop with a Tech2 scan tool or a GM dealer.

EDIT: TechnicalTed is right. check with the car runing.

EDIT: I deleted this not to misslead anyone with bogus info. If I have, I apologize. I was going by what a local mechanic had told me and apperently I need to watch my own ***. I wont post any thing on a subject unless I am 100% sure.

Most trans codes WILL set a light and a code. And most OBD2 scanners will read the codes just fine, including all the tranny codes.

Please check your fluid with the car warmed up and idling.

The car needs to be running for fluid to properly circulate and not build up inside the dipstick tube for the trans.

Check your owner'* manual.
