Driver's Side CV Shaft

Driver'* Side CV Shaft
I was helping my father in law remove his drivers side cv shaft yesterday and ran into a problem. At first we couldn't get the clip to release and allow the old shaft to come out. with a few hours of prying it let go. or so we thought. there is a shaft that the cv shaft is connected to and that other shaft came with the cv shaft. i can't figure out what to do. im hoping we dont have to tear the transmission apart but we might have to. the other shaft will slide back in and it looks like it is in the whole way but it wont stay there. it is loose. im wondering if there is a gear that it is sposed to be in or what. any opinions are welcome. thanks! and ps, i did search but couldnt come up with anything,

That would be the output shaft. It slides through the trans and clips into the other side axle. It clips into the differential. You may need to pull the passenger side and check that the circlip on that side didn't break. If so you should see it easily and remove it. Replace with a new clip and reassemble. Be careful when sliding the output shaft in, there is a plastic lube dam partway through and they break easily.
