Tech article on how to replace springs
 

Is there a tech article on how to replace the springs written up formally somewhere. I want to do my springs to 105# but don't know the proper way to do so. I have some info from different people but nothing from one source complete.

its quite simple once you know what you are doing. first, you need to go shopping. you will need to rent a valve spring compressor, autozone does it for free.

you will also need an air compressor to hold the valves up while you have the spring removed. you can grab one of these fittings from a compression tester, or I can send you mine.

first, remove the valve covers, and the rockers. then to make sure the valve's dont drop into the cylinder, you need to pressurize the chamber. this is done with the fitting and compressed air.

then, put the spring compressor tool on the spring and compress it. you will be able to feel if the valve is tight, or if it is going to drop. DO NOT let it drop, as you wil have to remove the head, $$$.

do the springs one by one, use a magnet to remove and apply the retainer locks.

i meant to say, after the first spring, they are a breeze

You also forgot to mention that some hissing is normal. If you feel a lot of air coming out either the intake or exhaust..(depending which valve you are on) you can tap the top of the spring with a rubber mallet to help seat the valve better. (If carbon etc exists).

Yes, thank you for the photos. I got it done yesterday. I used a little different tool that used the rocker bolt and a longer fork looking tool to compress the spring but that is about it. Went to 105# springs.

This needs to be in Tech Info along with Pauls post on changing rocker arms. I had to search very hard to find info to change rockers and springs. Very good write-up Haro!
