Stalling

I have a 2002 bonnie that stalls for no apparent reason. I can drive it for about 10-12 miles and then the engine wants to go dead. It'* almost like somebody is turning a key off. I am able to restart it, and keep it running, but only if i keep the rpms at 3k to 4k. Then, after the car sits for about 30min, it will start and run fine for another 20miles.

I'm suspect of the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Any thoughts on this?

I have recently (for this and other issues) replaced the following:
new fuel filter
new fuel pressure regulator
new MAF
new Engine Coolant Temperature sensor

This here is a very general test for the Crankshaft position sensor I did. Guess I better do a better one when it warms up a bit.

With the engine cranking, check the voltage from the orange wire to ground on the crankshaft timing sensor and the camshaft reference sensor.

  • Over 7V is satisfactory.


With the ignition switch on, check the voltage drop across the ground circuit (black/light blue wire) on the crankshaft timing sensor and the camshaft reference sensor.

  • A reading below 0.2V is satisfactory.
When using a digital voltmeter to check a crankshaft or camshaft sensor signal, crank the engine a very small amount at a time and observe the voltmeter. The voltmeter reading should cycle from almost 0 volts to a highter voltage of about 5 volts. Since digital voltmeters do not react instantly, it is difficult to see the change in voltmeter reading if the engine is cranked continually.

  • If the voltage does not cycle, sensor replacement is required.

  • Each sensor voltage signal should cycle from low voltage to high voltage as the engine is cranked.
Have you checked your battery cables? Sometimes they get corroded and can kill the engine at random.

Ok, i have an update. The problem is still not resolved. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

2002 Bonneville SE with 181k miles. I have replaced (in order):
new spark plug wires
rebuilt MAF sensor (had gotten a code on this)
new fuel filter
new Engine Coolant Temp sensor (had gotten a code on this)
new Fuel Pressure Regulator (pressure check in spec at key on and idle)
new Crank Position Sensor (AC Delco part)

I don't have any engine codes on the check engine light.

Any suggestions?

Oh, and I have a better description of the stall.

Not temperature dependent. I've had stalls 2 miles from home.

The stalls occur whenever i am in Drive (overdrive) and dropping down to make a turn. When the car gets down to about 1.5k RPMs, it will stall out. I have to shift into neutral and rev the engine on start to keep it running. I do get some jerkiness in the range of 1.5k RPMs to about 2.5k RPMS. So, if i shift down into drive1 or drive2, i can keep the car running. The stalling will go away eventually and i can shift back up to overdrive (or drive) until the next event. These stalling events last around 3-5 minutes, then the car drives just fine. During the stall, i get no dimming of lights, the radio keeps running fine, etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

I keep forgetting details...

My gas mileage is bad... just checked this morning and i'm running about 21.4mpg... i have been getting 25-26mpg. Could be due to running in Drive1 or Drive2 intermitently...

Just another clue.

Kind of sounds like you TPS. Here is a test for that. Let us know if this helped. If you have any problems following it let me know and I'll tweek it a bit.

Which code did you get regardig the maf sensor?

If you suspect the MAF as being bad, you can unplug it and drive without it. Just drive normal and keep the acceleration down to half throttle or less. If the problem goes away, the MAF is bad. If no change, the MAF is fine. But I still suspect the TPS. If you hit a bad spot the PCM sees this as a rapid drop in the throttle possistion.

I'm working from memory here (not usually a good thing)...

I think I had the P0102 code...

What will happen if i disconnect my TPS? will the car still run?

I will try to do the TPS check out. It may be late tonight or tomorrow afternoon.

To do the TPS test you don't need to start the car or even turn on the ignition. Your only testing the change in ohms
