It'* speculation on which codes will actually show up. We know the typcials though. If you have a fuel smell, then most likely you are on the money with an evap issue.

I put the clip in to let it pump itself.... watch it pump 15 or so gallons, then when it clicks, it shuts off, I pull it out. But I can usually smell gas for atleast the first 50 miles. Never inside the car, never near the engine. Only near the rear of the car.

what about a leak in your fuel tank, lines ,filter??? any puddles after you filler up? maybe after you fill your tank, find a clean parking lot to sit and look for leaks before you drive 50 miles.

I have, it doesn't leak. It'* only vapor, no liquid. I am trying to connect the smell of gas and my P0440 code that keeps popping up.

The purge valve is normally open. For the test to be run, that valve closes and seals off the outside air. Depending on the quality of that seal...or if the valve closes at all...it can range from the small leak to the large.

So, If I am pulling a P0440 EVAP code and I can smell gas, I should take that valve off and clean it up and check the seal right?

Would this be something I could find at an autozone or advance auto or only on rockauto.com?

I'd look for any obvious cracks or breaks first. Not sure how the shield it under the car..but check for rocks or anything that may have nicked the line or caused any issues first, then go for the seal.

As Bill said, give it a good visual inspection first. It is tucked up out of the way of most objects, but things do have a way of rattling around to hit something you don't want them to. If it looks good, take it apart. I think there may be a couple of screws and plastic clips. Note how everything is in there. I believe there is a spring, a foam filter, and the shaft that contains the seal...working from long term memory here. Clean everything well, lube it up with dielectric or other silicone grease, put it back together, reinstall, clear codes, then see if the code comes back.

I filled up this morning and noticed that the filler neck to the gas tank is pretty rusty...i remember reading a topic about how someone cleaned up their fuel neck to chase the code away. Anyways... I'll do both (clean the filler neck and inspect/clean the purge valve) on Sunday and get the code cleared too. Then I can see if that helped.

While you under the car checking things, may as well include checking the filler neck. That'* what the problem was in this thread.
