Sealant question for UIM/LIM replacement?

Sealant question for UIM/LIM replacement?
I noticed some folks are using a sealant when replacing these gaskets and some are not. What should I do and what type and where are you guys applying the sealant. Another newbie question is when looking at the UIM from the bottom with the TB side up,should the two passages directly below the stovepipe hole be open?They are open on mine but the openings look rather jagged.
