Default roadtrip vs service engine soon ( URGENT UPDATE)1/11/08

Last week I got the ses light, went and pulled the codes and they were the crank sensor, the thermostat?, and the o2 sensor. I kinda knew about the o2 because the cat is making noise during cold starts. my question is I have a roadtrip from Oklahoma to virginia beach,Va in 6 days. I work all 6 days so me fixing it is out but I really dont want to spend big bucks having someone else do it when i am capable. also we reset the codes and the ses light has not came back on, do you guys think it will be ok on the trip or should I fix one or all of the probs?

thanks, Trey

I cannot answer from a mechanical standpoint...but I can answer from a convenience standpoint: Can you afford to have a breakdown/repair while on the road? Do you have AAA or some other road service available? A tow bill off the highway is costly (usually $150 or so) and then the repairs if needed.

Others can advise you on the possible damage you would do to your car...but I'm thinking about your vacation and your wallet... so...the true question is what can you afford to risk and how does it compare with renting a car or borrowing someone elses?

It sounds like you could be having the famous intermittent crank sensor code problem. You can put it off for months if you have to. When it starts getting worse you will probably see your tach drop to zero once in a while. Watch your engine temps to make sure that the thermostat code isn't serious. It could be you need a new one(thermostat)....

Well we made it, 17hr drive, I-40 between knoxville, tenn and ashville, Nc was my favorite part of the trip so far. This is the first trip I have ever taken without a radar detector or a cb, so i felt kinda naked , I kept the speed about 10mph over posted, and averaged about 24mpg. The check engine light stayed off till we got here, then in traffic yesterday it came back on :( .I think we will go through richmond on the way back then down to I-40. today we are gonna go see the ocean, and sight see a little, the funerals not till thursday, then we will head back on sun. we will keep ya up dated on how the bonny does, and thanks for all of everones help

ok here is the deal. I now have a tranny problem. in 1st gear the car shudders badly, I have never had an auto tranny do this. it only happens in 1st gear, if i manually shift it to second to start from a stop it does fine, it is also okkay in all other gears. I did a search on this and couldnt find this exact problem anywhere. I have a place where i can change fluid and stuff but dont really have the cash for a rebuild. we are planning to leave for home (1325 miles) on sunday morn, so any help or suggestions would be great!!

that is very odd, because if the car is working correctly, if you leave the shifter in 2nd that the car will still start in 1st gear, but will not go past 2nd gear.

any check engine lights?
