I replaced the instrument cluster on my 2000 SSEi with one from a salvage yard. I had hoped that the odometer info was stored in my car'* master computer, and would display correctly on the replacement odometer display...but I found out that the odometer memory is built into the instrument cluster. So, my car that had 56K on it now has 18K.

Does anyone know if there is a legal procedure to reprogram the electronic odometer? Can a dealer even do it?

Just to be safe, I put the old IC back in thinking that my dealer might be able to reprogram the replacement odometer to the exact mileage that they see on the original, if it is still mounted in the car.

I don't know about reprogramming it, but I've read that you're supposed to put a sticker on the drivers door next to the tire pressure sticker with the old reading (yours) and the new reading (on new cluster) and maybe the date.

That'* very interesting, I thought it would ber stored in the car'* memory somewhere not in the dic. There has to be a way to make it correct .

the GM company responsible for the cluster repairs & exchanges will have to do it I'm afraid! I can do the older "manual" odometers by heart..... These newer ones require actual programing though.

I believe its kept ine BCM. If I unplug my battery for an hour to reset the PCM I don't lose the custom greetings, or odomter, or trip or any of the DIC stuff.

The ONLY way the clear the PCM, BCM & EBCM is by the use of a Tech II Scanner.

Here'* an update:

I went over to my friendly Pontiac dealer, explained my situation, and asked if they could reprogram the odometer on the cluster I got from a yard. After I got a big lecture about how it was illegal for the salvage yard to have sold me an instrument cluster, I was told that there was no way that the replacement odometer could be reprogrammed locally.

They said I waould have to buy a new unit from them, which they would then certify to the mileage on my car. A repair center somewhere would then program the new unit to the correct mileage. The cost: around $400 for a rebuilt IC...over $600 new.

All of this because a few 20 cent LED backlights quit working!

As I work at a Pontiac Dealership....That is what I was trying to tell you earlier in this very thread. If you had an older style of cluster, then you could just replace the bulbs & be done with it. BUT! As GM now uses different technology, you have to send away your present cluster (or buy another one) in order to get the same result now!

This is not technically true. The PCM can be reset changed etc without a tech II. DHP and others do not use a tech ii to reprogram PCMs .

Hmmm....new technology now means that it costs hundreds of dollars to fix something that used to cost $1 or $2. Whose idea was this!
