Did my shaft saturday. Bought the seringe and dissassembled the damn thing. Wasn't too bad. The thing I noticed though is the grease in my optinion is way to thin. I chose NOT to use the GM grease but some high dollar German made "Kluber" grease instead. Way thicker and tacky. After spending most time juggling the damn big rubber POS that protects the shaft in there I was good to go. Works like a charm and 2 hrs. sure beats $285 at the stealer and I know what was done!

For what its worth... I had a Clunky sound coming from my front end. Dealer did the lube shaft and later replace shaft dance. Still had this annoying sound mostly when backing out of the driveway into the street. The real problem occured at a traffic light out of town when my driver side front strut spring BROKE!......What was happening was that the strut bearing went bad and was not allowing the strut spring to move as intended. Not a cheap fix, but can be done by a DIY'er.

I think I will try that when I pull mine as mine has just started to make the noise and I will be able to get my car in a shop and tear into it and have another vechile to drive and I will try that and let you all know how it goes and what I think and see if that helps

Is this intermediate shaft problem something that you "feel" in the steering wheel or just hear? Also, can it happen over time...meaning at first, you can feel it and hear it only slightly, then it gets worse over time and you begin to hear it much more and feel it much more? I guess if you can feel it and it can happen over time, then I'm heading down this road and might want to do something about it now before it gets worse.

Great. Thanks Archon. Right now I feel it more and it'* worst when I'm at a stop and begin to accelerate, straight ahead or turning..but moreso when turning. Sound like this is the likely culprit? I'm not a mechanic by any stretch, so i'll have to take it in to have it done. Can my local guy do the job or should i be going dealer?

Generally, it is not felt while going straight ahead...just during low speed or stopped turning. It really is an easy fix to take it out. If you're not comfortable doing it, any good shop should be able to do it. If you're replacing it, the part is only available from GM.

Several moons ago I wrote a step by step procedure on how to remove, fix, and re-install the shaft. At the time I wrote the step by step procedure I think I had about 25K miles on my 2002 bonny. Now at 114K miles and still no return of the problem. Most of you concentrate on the alide part of the shaft. Thats not the problem. The problem is in the knuckle /universal joinyt. Move it back and forth while you use a good cleaner. Then dry it as best as possible and then work in a good low density grease such as lithium. Work the joints for about 15 minutes to ensure the grease has good penetration then re-install the shaft. Problem should stay solved as mine has all this miles later. Save your money and stop buying the same problem parts. When will GM ever learn to put zerk fittings back into this part!

Leaky door gaskets affecting you. Save your money and don't buy new gaskets. If leak is at bottom of door, lie most leaks are, simply cut two notches in the gasket (front part of lower gasket and back part of door gasket) to let the water find a way outside the door in lieu of inside your compartment. Got a leaky sunroof??? Simply exert an upward pressure on the back part of the glass to push the seal tight after each use (when you have opened the sunroof to enjoy the outside air) When you exert the upward pressure you will feel the window seal snugly in its frame and there will be no more leaks. I hav'nt had the ruck leak yet but if and when I do a slice f the gasket at the low end may solve this one too>

Jim, adjust your sunroof.

And even if it doesn't close all the way, it shouldn't ever leak into the cabin. You have gutters and drains to prevent that.
