Default Intermediate Shaft (and "Jacket") Replacement?

I'm another long term victim of the intermediate shaft fiasco (2002 Bonneville SE). I've had two lubes and two intermediate shaft replacements done to this car. The dealer feels that the way to correct this is not only to replace the shaft with the new & 'improved' version (p/n 26088295), but to replace the p/n 26080726 "Jacket" (or lower bearing as the mechanic called it). Has anyone heard of this 'fix'? Looking at the shop manual I'm not sure why they want to replace the lower bearing. They haven't actually inspected this part. Any replies would be appreciated.
