a case learn is short for crankshaft variation learn procedure. It is a procedure done with a tech II programmer. Any GM dealership can do it. You just have to use some discretion about asking them NOT to reflash the computer. If it does get reflashed you just threw away $100.00 because the data will be unretrievable. I think some dealers will do it for free (it just takes a couple minutes), whil others may charge.


As for what it does to be honest I really don't know you would have to ask some of the gearheads, P-Dad, or Rouge could tell you better than I could on that.


It has made me want to go out and drive my car again. So much more fun to drive.

Would installing a new pcm affect a warranty? The reason I ask is because my car is under an extended warranty up to 100k, and I don't want to do anything to lose it!

Yeah I'd say it might. but wait till someoen else rings in with a response. I really don't know. I don't have the extended warranty.

There is a $100 core charge for your old pcm, dont send it back, reinstall before any dealership work and swap back after the service.
The real fear is they will re-flash the program and your new updated data will be lost.

P-dad you make a very excellent point. That truly is the real fear.

Since "the fear" has been brought up do you have any advice on how to persuade the dealership not to refalsh the computer. i thought about using the direct approac and say "hey don't do that". But I don't know if that would be the professional way of doing it.

One other thing how does the CASE learn help??

The case learn is used to tune the crank with the pcm, no real pro'* or cons and it is not mentioned anywhere is the factory service manual except a pcm replacement. There are opinions whether you need to do this or not, I did mine after 6 months cause it cost me nothing, noticed no difference either.

Dont talk around a mechanic or above them, tell the straight up goods. They are going to have opions, listen politley and ask if they can help you out. Some shops have strict polocies and the mechanic may not agree but has to tow the line.

I noticed on you sig you have autolite 103 plugs "side gapped" what does side gapped mean??

When you installed your higher ratio rockers could you tell a difference in performance??
I'm thinking of doing those in the near future and just wondered if the gain is worth the dollar??

Side gaping is a more accurate way of gapping the plugs, the ground strap is more uniform and it helps eliminate hot spots. Another trick is to index the plugs where the ground strap is pointing in the same direction of all the plugs so it gives a more uniform burn.

The high ratio rockers passed the butt dyno with flying colors, much better top end, I'd guess 20whp?
If I were to do it again I would run with a new cam, a few more bucks but better overall performance......my 2 cents anyway?

thanks for your input. I have been debating on the new rockers and I'll probally get them in a few months. Gotta payoff other mods first Is there anything else I would need to do along with the rockers?? 20whp is quite a difference for the money!!
