Default How to get to rear plugs on 03

I'm having trouble getting to the plugs on the rear of my 03 (LeSabre).

There'* a techinfo on the plugs on 3800s up to 1999.

But are there any special tools that make it easier to get the rears on the 2000+ cars. I'm using a standard 1/2" socket set with a 12 inch handle. It'* an old standard set.

Haven't changed the plugs on a LeSabre, but on the Bonneville there is an engine lift bracket back there that you can remove to get more clearance. You don't use extensions to get to the plugs. I use the plug socket with a short U joint (swivel) and no extensions, and change them from the top.

I suspect the Bonneville and leSabre are exactly the same.

I was afraid I'd have to remove the lift bracket. It feels like it has 3 bolts holding it.
I think I have a swivel in my set of 1/2" tools. I didn't think of that.
These are harder than the rears on my 98 leSabre. There are more tubes and stuff behind the motor.

I didn't know what you meant in your first post by 12" socket set, but now I realize you meant 1/2". You might want to try a 3/8" drive to get in there. A 1/2" drive is pretty big.

Yes, I believe there are 3 nuts holding the bracket. It isn't the miracle cure you are hoping for, but it makes it slightly easier.

You also might need a cheater bar for leverage. A short length of pipe (12" or so) that fits over the end of your ratchet wrench. Galvanized iron pipe, thicker wall than copper pipe. Home Depot carries it.

Great for added leverage in tight spots. Use just to remove the plugs, not to tighten them.

Hydraulic jack handle on a shorty 3/8'* ratchet once in place. It worked well for me. I had a LeSabre, and 2 Park Aveys. And always seemed in to big a hurry to let the motor cool off. Nothing like tearing blisters off your hands while in the midst of doing it. If you ever get a chance, look at the N* stuffed in the V8. I pulled the lift brackets and tossed those heat shields. They can be sadistic PITA'*.
