Horrible Mileage......Keep getting check gas cap message....

update:
after finding correct item to work on and clean
i cleaned up the vent back by driver rear tire area
in the process broke the solenoid up front for the canister purge while checking the lines. So, with a clean vent out back and a new solenoid up front now....no check gas cap message yet..... not sure which did it though!!
