my 2000 bonneville blew a coolant elbow on friday while my son was driving it. he didnt know it at the time, kids never look at the gauges lol saturday on or way to the golf course, get a mile down the road the car shuts down because it is hot. i tow it home, see the problem, by sunday afternoon have replaced both elbows, water pump, thermostat and radiator. now there is a sluggish-ness, when i put the car into drive and accelerate. could it be related to the overheating? in park and ideling the motor sounds good and smooth, but touch the gas and feel the sluggish-ness. have not driven it enough to notice any notice any difference in mpg.

the icm and coils dont like getting hot but you probaly wont notice till they go. i would go over the plug wires and make sure none are melted, reseat the connections. hopefully didnt do anything to the stupid plastic manifold.

Overheating, depending on how extreme, can do a lot of damage. I am not going to list some of the things it can do because I don't want to jinx it. Inspect everything best you can for damage, and keep driving. Whatever specific problem has been created should become apparent. Check the oil dipstick every day for any evidence of contamination or foaming. Check under the rad cap every day for evidence of oil in the coolant. If you see either of those condtions stop driving the car right away.

i kmow what coolant in the oil means. what will oil in the coolant mean? also nave flashing service engine soon warning light. getting that checked at autozone today. I also thought intake gasket because of the roughness on acceleration.

Flashing SES light usually is a multiple cylinder random misfire issue, which would definitely give you a roughness on acceleration, hesitation, and just poor running overall under any kind of load on the engine.

Could have some bad plugs and wires, or could be an ICM or coil issue. I would start with plugs and wires though.

I agree. You should not drive the car with a flashing SES light. Get it scanned to see what codes show up.

With an overheated engine, I'm now suspecting a coolant leak somewhere between the upper manifold gasket and/or lower manifold gasket. If the CEL never came on before the overheat condition, then its possible the engine is sucking coolant into the cylinders causing the random misfire.

How is your coolant level since you retopped it off? Does your exhaust smell sweet?

the scan at autozone revealed a mis-fire on 6. bought a plug because that'* the easiest and cheapest thing to check first. will search the forum for info on the diagnosis on the problem after that.
