Gas odor?

The past few days I've noticed a gas odor, starting since the last time I filled my tank. I topped it off and a little gas dribbled out.
After the fillup, the odor was very faint (thought I may have a little gas on my hands or drips on my shoes) and I only noticed it when I stopped at a light after driving for a while with the windows up and A/C on. Today, I ran into Lowes for about ten minutes and when I came out the smell of gas was pretty heavy, and I'd driven less than a mile over to there.
I've checked under my hood, and can't find any gas or gas odors there. I did replace my fuel pump about 3 months ago, but there was no gas smell after I finished working on that and there is no gas smell in my trunk around the access panel.
I've seen references to a charcoal canister, but I haven't been able to find where that is or what I should do with it. I also saw that there is a GM recall on the fuel pressure system and was thinking about calling GM.
Does anyone have any suggestions or better instructions on how to check the charcoal canister?
Thank you all for your help!
