Default gas gauge problem

My gas gauge moves all over the place. It will say full then say empty. The only time it reads right is when its totally full. once it hits 3/4 tank, its all over the place again. Is this a gauge or sender problem? Is this common? how do I fix it?

More than likely the fuel level sensor is failing. It is an integral part of the fuel sender/pump assembly. There is an access plate in the trunk to remove this assembly w/o having to remove the fuel tank.

Yup, faulty fuel level sender. It can be replaced independent of the fuel pump, but the pump must be removed to do so.

Lumina..you don't need to change the pump at the same time. This swap is easy due to a trap door in your trunk.

Check your local autoparts stores as prices can vary.

So can someone please post the part# as well as cost estimate and best place to get the part. My SSEI has the same symptoms and would love to remedy this annoyance.
