Default Fuel Pump Question

I have a question regarding my 2001 Park Avenue Ultra. Some time ago we had to replace the fuel pump after we did this we noticed that the car would run out of gas while the gauge was just before the orange area on the fuel gauge. We took the car to another mechanic to find that the float arm was bent in such a way that would cause it to read wrong. The mechanic re-installed the pump and said the only thing to do is to replace the entire pump. Is there a way to replace just the float arm? I don't want to plunk down another $275 for a new fuel pump.

What is probably happening is the cannister is syphoning fuel into it from the tank. They might have forgotten to connect the 1/8" syphon line.

Here is a pic of the pump pulled out from the cannister is sits in.
See the small black hose. That is a separate bleed off the top of the fuel pump that acts as a venturi to syphon fuel from the tank into the fuel pump cannister.

So if this is not working the actual bottom of the fuel pump is about 3/4" off the bottom of the fuel tank. That'* a lot of fuel left.

i dont think thats the problem. i have seen the rod it is actually bent up. it looked like the mechanic the first tim hand just shoved the float throgh the hole instead of tilting it.
