Does the "heat trap of death" need to stay on or can you drive around without it? Does it keep the engine cooler or anything?

Take the heat trap off....it won't cause any issues and will keep the intake a bit cooler.

By the term "heat trap", do you mean the large gray plastic engine cover held on by the oil fill cap? Is it better to leave that off? It seems to serve no purpose. What is it's purpose?
