Default Dealer Hourly Charge

I took my 2000 SE in today and for the 6th time, the intermediate shaft was changed. I checked to make sure it was the revised part. I was charged $136 for the part and $196 for labor.

I also had a bad driver'* side window regulator. The motor may just be stuck. It was once before and a guy charged me a $100 to take off the panel, loosen it and check it out. I'm not a mechanic and don't work on my car.

They charged me $350 for the regulator which they ordered, but he also told me that it is going to be 2 hours labor. That seems high to me. Any GM mechanics or knowledgeable folks out there who might know what the GM book estimates for these repairs. I don't mind paying my fair share, (try 10 window regulators and 6 intermediate shafts in 7 years), but I don't want to overpay. Thanks.

you should be OK with the new i-shaft if you got the updated design finally.

however, you should really look into getting an ebay regulator or having them modify your original regulators to make them stronger. The ebay ones are updated and will last longer than the GM replacements. I have no idea why they charge 2 hours labor for 1 window regulator, I could change mine in under 20 minutes.

That'* why those places are sometimes referred to as "stealerships" !

I got suspicious when they wanted to charge me 2 hours for a 10-minute serpentine belt replacement job - which I ended up doing myself.

Noo.. the 'dealershaft'

The 'establishment' that my mom purchased her SSEi from originally in 2000 (as well as 4 other prior purchases over a 12 year period .. all cash) really chapped my a$$ when they charged $68 labor back in 2004 when I wanted to set the Magnasteer to firm.. this while installing I-shaft #3 which I paid for, and they installed for free.

The service manager had always been great to work with even when I had a headlight motor replaced in my WS6 but he turned into a jerk real fast. Basically if I remember his quote correctly 'Why don't you take it over to ****** (Cadillac dealership where my mom bought her STS) and have them do it for you for free"

Wrong thing to say to to me GM got a call on that one as well... I have ran into the asst service manager at several charity events which I have been cordial and so has he... Even got a free beer a couple times at some other local events...nevertheless.. you screw somebody even a car dealership it will come back around

yeah, I just did two window regulators and they are quite simple. First time I've done them (in a 2000 Bonneville none-the-less) and the right rear was a fricken breeze... less than 40 minutes and I was taking my time.
The drivers door regulator took about 20 minutes, but I have to get the door module installed (original was bad along with master switch assembly) and the door panel back on.... another 5 minutes tops.
On the intermediate shaft..... is there no sort of warranty on them? How about lemon-law?

it seems to me alot of people get intimidated by working on their cars. in some cases it can be to much with certain types of work, but if you got some time on a weekend to spare trying it out and learning it, you will be much happier with the results. Also, you will get an idea of how bad the dealer is ripping you off at times. i have always done my own work. i have always been interested in how things work and go back together though too. Guess what i am saying is that i would hate to see what all the work i have done on my cars would have added up to over the years. Probably by now could have bought another car with the money i would have spent.

this is by no means a put down to you at all, just making a statement..... buy the regulator(*) off of ebay and just give it a shot, what do you have to loose? maybe some free time.........and all you will do is learn something you didn't know before right? and with the money you saved, hell.....you can buy something cool for the car right?
