Default Climate control does not remember last settings.

I have 2002 SSE and I am about to install remote starter. The main reason is clear the windshield from ice. So I thought that I put fan on the maximum and temperature on 90 degrees and press 1 on the door to memorize these settings - the next time I start the car - it will automatically start blowing hot air at the windshield.
But I just realized that I cannot make the car memorize the settings. I set the temperature, make the air to blow at the windshield, put fan at maximum and press and hold 1. Then I shut the car, close it, open and start. It remembers the temperature, but every time I start it - the air is blowing at the floor and the fan is on minimum (1 out of 5) and the display shows "Auto".
Is this supposed to be like that or am I doing something wrong?
Also, will it be possible to wire the remote starter (Viper 5901) to make the air blow at the windshield and the fan to be on maximum?
Thanks.

No. The memory is also for music settings anf for climate control. When I press 2 - another CD track starts playing and the fan starts blowing at different speed. I also tried to save the settings for Driver #2 but again when I start the car the fan starts blowing at the floor at minimum speed.

ok just went out and played with mine for a lil bit hit 1 which is my setting and it was like i never left the car from the last time i drove it then pressed 2 which is the wifes setting after getting pushed up against the wheel and the dash i played around a lil bit i got it to remember the hvac setting by removing it from auto that is the only way i can get it to remember anything so before you leave the car everynight set it to defrost and floor and off auto with the fan on high if this doesn't work then i would say something is messed up as this is how i got it to work on mine

This is right out of the 2002 Owner Manual -

Comfort Controls Personalization (If Equipped)

This feature enables up to two drivers to store and recall
comfort control settings for the temperature, fan speed
and the direction of the airflow.

The memory buttons (1 or 2) for this feature are located
on the driver’* door panel and correspond to the
numbers (1 or 2) found on the back of each remote
keyless entry transmitter.

To recall comfort settings, press the unlock button on
the remote keyless entry transmitter before entering
your vehicle.

If you enter your vehicle without using the remote
keyless entry, the settings for the last identified driver
will be recalled when you put the ignition in
ACCESSORY or RUN.

To program a personal choice climate control setting,
do the following:

1. Choose a temperature setting for the driver and if
desired, for the passenger. See “Electronic Climate
Control System (Option)” earlier in this section.

2. Adjust the fan speed and the direction of the airflow.

3. Locate the memory buttons on the driver’*
door panel.

4. Press a memory button (1 or 2) until you hear two
beeps. The beeps confirm that your selection has
been saved and can now be recalled.
Follow these steps each time you want to change the
stored settings.

I asked because I installed remote starter and the idea was to blow the hot air at the windshield to melt the ice. The idea was to leave climate control on (in my case to direct the airflow to the windshield by pressing the "FRONT" button) and shut the car. And when I start the car the next day - I expect the car to remember the last settings and start blowing the air to the windshield.
What I found out is that the car remembers the climate settings only when it is in Auto mode. But when I press the FRONT (windshield) button and shut the car it won't remember that and when I start it the climate control in Auto Mode and air is going to the floor.
So as of now, the only thing I can acheive is to leave the car in the Auto mode and select the mode to blow air at the windshield and at the floor. It is better than nothing, but the airflow to the windshield is very weak (some 10 times less than when I press the FRONT button).

My question is following:
The auto mode has several setting for airflow: a) to the floor b) to the windshield and to the floor c) at the driver d) re-circulation e) etc.
Is it possible to somehow change wiring so that when I select Auto Mode of recirculation (which I don't really need) - it would act as though I press the windshield button? And since this is going to be and Auto mode - the car would remember it. Is it possible at all? Or it is too complicated and I better not to mess with this?

Thanks.

P.*.
If I call GM with a mechanical question - do they have people handling such calls?

There is a whole module besides the HVAC controls and display so possibly but it would be hard to tell without looking at a service manual

I am familar with the Viper 5901, if you find a wire that you can splice power to that would make the HVAC switch to the windshield you could use the defroster output of the Viper to do that

you will like the 5901, my buddy has it on his GTO and it is sharp, we just added the dual stage field sensor today which plugged right in, this is the same model I will put in my car very soon
