I think you have a couple good points there about the filter and the possibility of damage to the evap line under there, Bill.

Thanks Toasty!

I knew that I should put a disclaimer in there, as the 2000+ are different in a number of ways from the '96-99. Let'* face it, we're all more familiar with the year/years we own...

From a PM from Dave...he swapped gas caps with his GTP buddy and the issue still persisted on the Bonneville. In other words the gas cap was informally tested and passed.

So Dave,
You gonna check out that fuel filter and the evap/vacuum lines next?

Default P0440 Code on my 2001 SSEi

The Dealer claims they checked the fuel filter and did a pressure check on the lines and everything checked fine, but I will check them again myself.

Yes, the PCM runs the Evap System Test routine at random intervals, however, I believe the routine can be given the command to run with a Tech II scan tool. This way the Evap System can be checked for any vacum leaks.

Default P0440 Code on my 2001 SSEi

I think I just solved the problem.
Found a connection on the canister that wasn't snug.
It pushed in about 1/2 inch and clicked.
Reset my codes.
Thanks all.
I intend to visit the dealer and ask them for my money back tomorrow.

Great news, Dave. Glad that you found it, and for reporting back on what the solution was. Good luck with the dealer.
