I know this is probably a unanswerable question but I am going to ask it anyway...my check engine soon light came on last night when I went to pick up my daughter from the Sacramen to airport. All gauges appear fine...oil pressure right around 60, temp normal, no codes flashing!! Can anybody tell me what may be causing this? The oil is at approx 48%. I haven't looked under the hood yet but I thought I would check with the experts first. Any help would be apprciated!

the only way to know what caused the light is to find out what code is stored in teh computer, take the car to advance or autozone ad get the EXACT code and report back to us

As mentioned..several auto parts stores (parts america chain) rent out scantools for free and autozone will scan and clear for free....

Please get it scanned and let us know. then we can see what the next steps are

Moving to 2000 - 2005 since it is a mechanical problem... and yes, Advanced Auto will check them for free... you may have to ask them to tell you what the code number is... sometimes there are more than one.

Ok...just filled up the tank and the check engine soon went away. I will still get the code but does this help anybody come up with anything??

Possibly your gas cap wasn't tight enough. Trips a EVAP code when its loose.

Lets not jump to conclusions.

There are several evap related codes, defective gas caps did cause a lot of problems on the 2000+ though.

One thing you can check is the rubber seal on the gas cap and the part of the metal tank filler it seals against and be sure that both are clean. I've lubed mine with vaseline when the SES light came on.

Think back to when the light originally turned on. Was it when the car was slightly warmed up and you restarted the car? Was the tank between 1/4 and 3/4 full? That'* when the car run a pressure check on the evap system. On mine within 30 seconds of starting after driving 3-4 miles, stopping for coffee at a gas station, and restarting the light came on. Both times I redid the gas cap and let the motor cool to that inbetween temperature, restarted at home, and it turned the light off.

Ok, herre is the code...it is a P0404 code and has something to do with the EGR valve! Does this mean it needs to be replaced or is that something that just needs adjusting/cleaning and can I do that with your expert guidance???? Thanks for all of your input as always!!

P0404

You can try cleaning it first and see if that helps, otherwise you may have to replace it. They are relatively easy to remove.

EGR Removal

Plan on buying a new gasket for it.
