Default A/C COMPRESSOR

Finally am gonna take a stab at the compressor, changing it ,So I got one from a yard.
Mine rings like a bell the clutch does not engage no matter what and I can see the steel grindings in between clutch and pulley. Now the used replacement I was gonna try before going new looks great but when I turn pulley by hand I can here the clutch rubbing a bit , should I assume that it would have the same problem as I already have or does anybody know if compressors do this.Should it spin quietly like say a alternator pulley.I thought 50 bucks what the heck, I can take it back.thanksi

Well , dont everyone jump in at once, JK
i changed out compressor , tough to get at but not too bad, and seems to run fine as far as the ringing noise is gone and I dont have to worry about it seizing up.One day Ill charge it up and see how well she leaks lol.

John, The compressor clutch shouldn't engage with a de-pressurized A/C systrn. Since you had the system open to atmosphere, you should evacuate, do a drop test, then re-charge with r134a (and pag oil) of the correct amount. I personally would have a reputable A/C service shop do this, just my .02.

Yes Mark i will do all of this, my main concern was the compressor as it was ringing badly like a school bell and I could see steel grindings between clutch and compressor.I think the bearing was gone as the clutch wasnt turning evenly.I will take your advice when I do try to get a/c going.Like I said I dont even use the a/c in my other cars maybe when its 100 degrees, but it does bother me just because I dont like when things dont work.So thankyou Mark
