Default Bad shifting after WOT downshift. (`01 NA Grand Prix GT)

Sorry to ask a question about a Grand Prix here on the Boneville club, but I have vastly more respect for this club'* opinions, and hey, it'* the same drive train. . .

My wife'* 2001 Grand Prix GT, normally aspirated series II 3800 engine, will downshift (as expected) when you floor the accellerater at highway speeds, but then it fails to upshift several moments later, and it sputters and jerks a little, and then the "Service Engine Soon" light comes on, and goes out after around 15 seconds of blinking.

Other than this problem, it otherwise drives perfectly smooth with plenty of power. Gradual accelleration that doesn't invoke a downshift is no problem at all. She has around 62000 miles right now.

I figure the light coming on indicates that it threw a code, so I'll have the dealer diagnose it, but I thought I'd ask if anybody has any ideas what this might be?

Update: It went to the dealer today, and the problem was: Catalytic converter was getting plugged up! Now we bought the car used in 2003, and we didn't get an extended warranty on it, because a GM extended warranty would only last to 60,000 miles, and that was only about 2 years away at the time. Now the car has 62,000 miles. But get this: GM has some sort of special coverage for the catalytic converter, so it didn't matter that we bought the car used, or that we had no warranty, so they replaced the converter at NO CHARGE.

That'* just very cool. I know a lot of you guys do all your own maintenance, and I always used to do all my own, too. But as I get older and have less time available, I often just turn my car over to my dealer. I bought both my Bonnie and my wife'* Grand Prix from this dealer, and they also maintained my wife'* previous 88 Grand Prix. They've always been up-front with us, advising us when they thought a repair wasn't worth the cost, and so forth. So here'* a plug for good Pontiac dealerships. These guys treat me right, and so far I've bought 2 cars from them.

Coincidently, we just changed the cat in an 01 GT because of it being clogged. I think there was a recall on them.
