So I changed the oil in the bonneville yesterday for the first time since I bought it back in december. When I purchased the car from the dealership, they said they changed the oil as long with other general maintenance stuff. Anyways, when I went to drain the oil out, I ended up filling two empty 1 gallon jugs (8 quarts) and spilling about 1/2 a quart of oil on the floor because the pan overflowed. All I can think is that the guys at the dealership misread the transmission capacity for the engine capacity. That or they just forgot to drain the oil before adding more...Either way I ended up finishing by switching to mobil-1 synthetic 5w-30 and a mobil-1 extended life oil filter.

So my question is, is there anything I should worry about after running that much oil in the engine? I'm lucky i didn't blow a main seal or something.

If the level is high enough, the crank will whip the oil into a foam. You could lose oil pressure if that happens, I've heard.

I'm surprised that with that level, it was spewing out the dipstick! That'* what happened with my dad'* '95 when he took it in for service and they overfilled it.

Just to be certain, are you losing any coolant? That would be a lot to lose, but want to be sure that there aren't other issues.

I've heard about the oil being whipped into foam but everything came out just fine, just dirty and way more. I'm hoping now for a decent increase in mileage. But so far everything seems ok but i'm taking it into the dealership next week to have them look at it anyways. Luckily I purchased a two year powertrain warranty when I bought the car. haha that reminds me of my 3.1... About 2 months ago I was driving my 3.1 and the oil pressure gauge started getting lower and lower, well my other 3.1 car identical to that would do the same thing when it was like 1 quart low on oil. So I didn't even check the dipstick and dumped a quart in. Oil pressure would go up to like 25 so it was good enough for me (usually runs at like 70-75 though), but it would go back down after like a week so I just kept putting a quart in every week. I knew the engine had some major problems (blown headgasket AND blown lower intake gasket among a few other things) but I had to get to work and school and stuff and I'm gonna L67 swap the car in a few months anyways so I didn't really care if the engine went. So I tore the engine apart to fix the issues with it and pulled the drain plug and it filled up 2 7 quart drain pans. Ooops..... The blown headgasket and LIM gasket were causing coolant to go into the oil, making me lose oil pressure, so i'd add more oil and that would fix it for a little while.

I got a good laugh from it....

If coolant had got into the oil, how different would it look? I'm just wondering because the oil didn't look like it had coolant in it but i'm use to the regular green stuff and not dex-cool. Would that make a difference in what it looks like?

Coolant in the oil will look like chocolate milk - not a pretty sight!
