Default 2000 Bonneville SE 3.8 V6 idling problem

my bonnie has a idling problem. it will go faster automatically, and the engine with race in park. I have been told it is the idle air control or throttle position sensor. I don't want to bring it to a garage because I am a broke college student. How do I find out which part needs to be replaced.

Could be a simple vacuum leak, bad PCV valve, problem with the EGR, or dirty throttle body. That'* in addition to a bad IAC or TPS. So start with the vacuum leak.

easiest way to check for a vac leak would be to get some carb cleaner, start the engine, spray it around suspect areas and listen for the engine to change pitch.

Every time that'* happened on my car, it'* always after improperly installing the throttle position sensor. If you've removed that recently, consider this your easy fix.

EDIT: Moved your thread to the Bonneville section. We guys love our Bonnevilles in there.
