Can't find a consistent answer on this site. Replacing rt. ft. wheel hub tomorrow evening. Can someone tell me the size socket to use on the bearing nut.

I've heard 36mm... nope, not it. I've heard SAE 1-5/16". Could this be it?

I put a $56 totally refundabel deposit on a set of large metric loaner sockets from Pep Boys. 34mm is tad too large (but may work). 32mm is way to small.

Oh and the torque............... 110 ft-lbs? 118 ft-lbs?

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe that the one that I use is 34 mm. I don't have it with me right now, so I'd have to confirm that later. The GM specs for the torque is 118 ft. lbs., but occasionally the instruction with the hub have a different spec listed. In that case, use the spec that the hub manufacturer recommends.

Thanks archon. As I indicated, the 34mm seems a little sloppy. I know its not on much tighter than a lug nut so I might give her a try anyway.

yes, its a 34, it will feel sloppy almost every axle nut i have encountered itsnt snug with the socket

Most likely at that size it will be 6 point only. Try to get a 6 point whenever possible.

I use a 1 5/16" to do it. Again, slightly sloppy just like the 34mm but it gets the job done without slipping at all and mine were on there pretty tight.

I used the 34mm this evening to change the driver'* side bearing. The socket worked well. The nut was really not on all that tight. Maybe 100ft lb or so. I torqued her back to 115.

Funny thing: my humming/whirring noise is still there. The driver'* side wheel end play (now it doesn't). The passenger side bearing showed no end play. Both bearings were quiet when I rotated the tires with weight off. I could feel nothing in the springs either. Now I'm wondering if getting the tires rotated one day before noticing the noise has any bearing (no pun intended) on the humming/whirring noise. Guess rotating the tires back would have been cheaper than a new bearing, but the tires were very quite fore and aft before the rotation. I get them rotated every 5K miles. Very good wear so far after 15k miles. Any ideas or troubleshooting tips before I go after the passenger side bearing too?

One other thing.... I three bolts that hold the hub on gave me more trouble than ANY bolt (rusted or not) that I have ever removed. Those were a real PITA. Took me 2-1/2 hours to get three 13mm bolts off. I rounded a couple off before I got smart and purchased a "damaged nut/bolt remover" set. That godsend was recommended by my mechanic brother after he got tired of hearing me pi__ing and moaning.

It could very well be the tire swap. Look into how they swapped the tires. I'm a bit old school on tire rotating and refuse to allow any X pattern swapping. Personally..I put too many miles on between rotations to have the direction changed.

if you had some end play in the bearing then your efforts were not made in vein. End play is just ONE cause of a bearing faiure. Some bearings will have play but not make noise, while other bearings will make noise, but feel perfectly tight.
