I just got my 2000 SE back from my mechanic, and I had him fix a few things, One of the things I would have liked to do was fix the gas gauge, which only works for the first 1/2 of the tank.
He said it would be damn near $1000 in labor because of all the work involved in dropping the gas tank and a bunch of ****. I decided that I don't really mind just hitting the trip reset when I fill up the tank. But damn, $1000 is rediculous for something that seems so small

That is correct, there is an access panel right side of trunk close to rear bench. That price of $1000 is down right extortion at best. Shop around, I'd even go with a GM Dealership before I give a private mech. that kind of cash.
I had the full pump on the Grand Cherokee replaced where they did have to drop the tank to do the work, and that only cost me $375! The $1000 is way out of line, imho, even if he did have to drop the tank!
so the sender unit for the fuel is a common thing to go up in our cars???? whats the PN im going to get it and fix it now before it happens!! damn GM. i just ordered my oil pressure sender lastnite.. waitin for that... any easy way to fix it???

You're machanic is dumb. Mine cost $900 due to the fact that my fuel pump failed because of it. I'm sure it was a line of BS, but my warrenty covored it. So a free fuel pump is all good.
Acording to my machanic, the fuel sendor was bad causing the gas gague not to work. Over time this strained my fuel pump, causing it to fail in the end. Hence the $900. the place I got it done was top dollar too.

I can't see a faulty fuel level sending unit causing a fuel pump to go bad... That is unless you are routinely running the car out of fuel. The fuel pump is supposed to be bathed in fuel to keep it cool. If you are all the time running low on fuel, then the life of the pump will suffer... But if you don't know how much fuel is left in the tank, you should be filling up LONG before you actually think you are in danger of running out of fuel... That'* just common sense.
Oh, and $1000 to replace a faulty fuel level sending unit is highway robbery! Tell your mechanic to take a hike!
