I just checked the price for a new oil pan gasket for the 3.8L aluminum oil pan.
Can an oil pan gasket for the 3800 be over $40!?

Have you seen the gasket? If you saw it you might understand why its so expensive. Its not just a gasket its a tray and everything too.
Either way, thats not really that bad considering intake manifold gaskets are like $20 and head gaskets start at like $35 and go on up to ~$100.
Also, FWIW you can get an oil pan gasket for $29.99 from ZZP.

I pretty sure Series I is different than Series II.
The S2 gasket is rubber inlaid into a windage tray that spans the enture oil pan area. In that kit is a oil pump pick up tube gasket. You may have to remove the pick up tube to get the pan gasket off.
Also remember to loosen the oil level sensor. And put back in loosely before reinstallation.
$40 is about right. GM dealers include a tube of engine sealant with the gasket to keep leaks from occuring.

You posted the correct pan gasket for your car, but Bob'* is 12574776 and should retail for twice as much or more than yours. This gasket is listed through 99.
Another gasket is listed starting in 2000. I have NFC what the difference is. The part number for that one is 24506069 and should be close to the price of the S1 gasket, half that of the 95-99 gasket.
