You are correct, the u-bend is after the cat. The reason the manifolds are different is because the exhaust system is completely different because of the fact that the GP is on a smaller platform, so the h-body exhaust doesn't fit, and the w-body exhaust is too small for the h-body.

back on topic...when we dropped an 02 impala 3800 into a 96 SE, had had to use the 96 exhaust manifolds, egr, and fuel rails.
we also used the 96 throttle body for simplicity.

once you get down to it its pretty self explanitory

When I got my engine replaced when I first got my car, not much had to be changed. In fact, I don't recall anything major that needed to be changed.

what kinda of vehicle was it out of?

I'm not too sure cause my dad did all the work.

I wanna be confident to say it was from a Buick. But that'* a lot different than an Impala. Different mounts and such.
