Bout the same as you are seeing...

I think I liked it better when you were worrying how much the mechanic was going to charge you to swap the HB

Default Opposite Problem: High oil pressure

At all times, I seem to have high pressure. (93 SSE w/ */C, 149,000 miles)

Started about 6 weeks ago when the air temp was over 105F. First time it happend was a short drive (about 4 miles) after sitting for 2 hrs. the SES set off, which is why I even noticed.

Normal on the guage for the past 10 years had been about straight up, or mid range, now it'* consistently at 3/4, and varies much more than it used to. The SES gets set off sometimes (will read the code this weekend).

My factory manual says normal oil pressure */b 60lbs.

So, Questions:
1. Is there some calibration to the guage (i.e. mid-gauge is 60, or 40, or what?)
2. Is it likely only the pressure sender that is flaking out, or is it possible that some blockage near the pump/sender is driving the pressure high?

Oh, and the last oil change has been in the car for about 12 weeks (not driving the Bonnie as much lately).

thanks,

Jason

Your manual says it should be between X and Y as an acceptable range...doesn't it?

And that 60psi is at what rpm 5,500?

Yes, i would think it would be a ranger, not an exact figure.........

No, IIRC, just 60, not a range. I'll look it up again this evening.

Don't recall a posted RPM --again, I'll recheck.

tnx, Jason

Take my word for it.. that'* at a certain RPM.. because our oil pressure is variable w/rpm

Oil pressure IS variable based on RPM
As long as you're within 20-100 PSI in most engine you're fine.

mine runs at the 3/4 mark when on gas hot and cold.. and just under 3/4 mark ( which I'm assuming is 80PSI since mine is gimpy and shows in Kpa ) and at 60 after oil is warmed up from a nice drive during idle ( the mark after half ).. Notice also when there'* less oil in the engine that pressure will fluctuate more between idle and on gas after warm up ( same with when oil is losing its viscocity and needs to be changed )

Lower pressure usually means oil is going thru the main bearing and wat not as the clearance has increase ( along with other stuff in the engine )

How accurate those GM gauges are well.. you know how that goes ( use it as a guideline ) only an aftermarket oil pressure gauge may give you a more accurate reading

Heres my expierence with the oil in my 93. I started out when i bought it with the gauge pegged at 120psi. After three weeks the sending unit poped and started spitting oil all over the ground. I lucked out that it happened not too far from dads house and nothing was hurt. After getting a new sensor put in my pressure was 30psi hot and 50psi cold at idle. I have recently done an oil change with Mobil 1 10w30 and a K&N filter, and now have 60-65psi cold and 40-45psi hot at idle. I think that the Mobil 1 recommendation is a great one, and I will never switch back. Hope this helps.
