Hey, just wanted to drop a huge thanks to you guys. I installed a generic o-ring that was just the right size to slide over the bottom of the PCV valve. The car not only stopped making noise, it also seems to have a little better pickup.

The whistle noise is caused by the extreme vacuum in the crank case pulling against the lips on the crankshaft end seals. Between the vacuum and the rotation, the seal lips will actually vibrate and open just enough to allow air to be sucked in past the seal and create a high pitched whistle noise from the flow of air.

As bill buttermore said, this does cause harm to the seal so don't ignore it.

I know this particular case is fixed, I just thought I'd add that bit of info.

Not sure I've ever heard that one. Good info. In most of the cases on the 3800, the whistle is in the pcv area and merely a leak or improperly seated PCV.
