not to sound all like the voice of reason, but it just might be a good idea to actually find out what'* wrong with your car... your original post was somewhat short of details, and the only point thereafter on what it might be was sort of a worst case scenario.
this is a solid engine, with very little exception - the main two being the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets. which aren't that big of a deal to replace. small price, i say.

but if you want a neon, by all means. just know that they are a very hit or miss type of deal. my family has had 3, and i've known many others with them.
the good neons are pretty good, and the bad ones are REALLY bad. one of the guys i knew had 4 engines (no joke) replaced in 3 months time (regular driving, no beating on it), before DC settled with him for 8000 big ones. he went out and bought a different car. the one my mother had (the base model) was decent. the fully loaded one she traded it in on started falling apart - after two years, it had a nasty knock when cold, combined with a temperamental issue where you would be running on three cylinders. then the AC died. nasty nock, 3 cylinders, 2 years.

another one we had in the family lasted well until about 140k, when EVERYTHING started to break on it - no joke.

hit or miss.

p.*. it went into the dealer several times under warranty (the 2 years, 3 cylinder, knocking engine) and nothing was ever fixed... instead of messing with it, my mom was so sick of it, she got rid of it.

now she drives a '90 olds 88, which with the exception of a bad ICM has been ROCK solid...

gotta love those 3800'*!

The difference between a Neon and a Bonneville is this.... Once a Neon is 5 years old you get rid of it because it is disposible, you got a 15,000 dollar car. The Bonneville SSEi is a 45-50,000 dollar car, worthy of spending some money to restore (maintain).
Seriously, I worked for a Chrysler dealership for a while (6 months) and nobody there gives a Sh&% about Neons. Peppy, yes. But good God, the car is cheap, cheap!! Don't step down, look harder at the Bonnie!!!

Even if you get a good one the stupid plastic light lenses will go Yellow on
you in a few years causing bad night vision and bad cosmetic looks.
I used to be a Mopar man with Big Block Roadrunners.
Drive a day fix the next day. Thats my experience.
Allthough everybody loved the cars including myself.
