on my 1999 if it is dark the sentinal turns on full lighting automatically. You can override it with the ring around the ****, but that only works in park. When you put it in gear they come on. On the *-10 and sierras you can disconnec the harness from the photo cell and put in a 2K resistor across the harness and this makes it think it is sunny out all the time. Dont know if it will work here.
