Default transmission swap

hi
ive got a 94 and 96 bonneville both have transmissions not working both cars 3.8 with opt fw2 3.06 every junkyard i try says only a year specic tranny will work...why cant i use a 93 in my 94 what needs to be changed? any help looking for the excact year makes the search all the more difficult and a rebuild upward of 1800 bucks is much more than i believe either car is worth any help would be appreciated

While I'm unsure what changed beyond the pcm and possible wiring harness in the transmission. The 94 appears to be coming up as year specific when I search for it. The 96 will also accept the 97 trans.
