Default Tranny problem

I have a 1996 Bonneville SE that in the last couple of weeks stopped going into reverse. I thought at first it was a linkage issue but within a week, it would go out of gear as soon as it hit 25 mph. I also noticed when it is in park, it has developed a low rattling. The fluid level is good and I don't see any grit. I can't afford a major rebuild right now. Any suggestions would be of help. Thanks.

doesn't smell burnt but it is dark. Replaced the fluid and screen when I got the car about 25k ago. Didn't get it flushed at the time though.

K. Finally got the time to bring it to a shop to look at it. They wanted 450 up front to give me an estimate. Off the top of his head, after describing the symptoms, he said it would be 1500 and up. I love my car but I'm not sure I love it that much. Does this sound right or if not, is anyone aware of someone or place in the Denver area I can see? Any advice would be appreciated.
