Default Towing a Trailer with an SSEi

in the 1995 bonneville manual, it says NOT to tow a trailer if your car is an SSE or SSEi.... i don't understand why this is because I would guess the more powerful engine would be better suited for towing a trailer and that the ELC would be better for the added weight as well.... has anybody ever towed with their SSEi? i would be planning to tow a snowmobile trailer with two snowmobiles weighing around 1000 lbs at the most.

so, is it ok? why do they say not to?

also, where could you find a trailer hitch for a 1992-1999 bonneville?

A 1000 pounds should be OK, but wouldn't go much over that. You may want to consider a trans cooler if your going to be pulling a long distance.

You asked kind of the same question last year https://www.gmforum.com/t278440/

The answers then are really no different than now....it'* not recommended. You are dealing with added stresses from a SC motor to the tranny, and then when you throw on an additional 1000+ pounds on the bumper you're chances of grenading the tranny are increased. The GVW for towing is maximum for the car, but does not take into consideration other weigh additions such as people and cargo.

Motor HP, tranny, rear end ratios, tire size and shocks are all desigined into vehicles that are designated suitbale for towing. It has nothing to do with just motor HP.

Let'* also factor in the added stress to the brakes. Most feel the Bonneville before 2000 was under sized on the brakes. Adding another 1000 to stop will push the system past it'* limits in my eyes.
