Exclamation Possible starter issue

Today I started my car, and it was just fine. Made a few stops before work, and everything was fine. Get to work, work for 3 or 4 hours, and decide I need to go grab a coke. Car wont start.
Its not grinding per say, but it is making a really weird sound. You can tell its the starter area, and something isn't right.
Its not that gear shredding CHING! sound. It'* more like thunk thunk thunk.
You can hear its with the starter not engaging properly.
I don't have a suitable jack for being under the car. I cannot reach the starter without it raised. Its parked on a gravel driveway. The best part is I live about 50kms from work, and its a whole separate town.
Anyone have any great ideas how I can get my sorry *** home tonight?

Clean up the battery cables, both ends of both cables. Ther'* a good chance that will fix the problem.

Yea Dan, Its all pretty clean. We just put that motor in, and cleaned it all up. The only thing i could think of is maybe the starter is a little loose, and not seated properly. I have no idea how that may sound. Only noises i have ever heard from a starter is click, ching, silence, and now this.
