Tie rod removal
Had the wheels rotated and balanced at the alignment. Didn't help. The techs checked everything else while it was up and didn't find anything underneath to account for the wheel shake.
However, they didn't say if they looked at the rotors. The thought of a warped rotor never occured to me. That'* why I love this site. The more brains thinking about something the better. I'll pull them manana and have them checked. Thanks.

It is not common but possible that a CV joint going bad can cause a really bad shake. If you can do so safely, lift and support the car solidly on stands, then have someone run it up to speed while you have a look at the half shafts for anything other than smooth rotation. If you can do this from the side of the car, better in case it comes down.
So I am now convinced that there was nothing wrong with the front end/steering. Had the car out for about 5 minutes before I noticed a lack of power in the engine, followed by a lot of noise. Engine now sounds like it'* ready to let go at any minute. Deciding whether to tear her down or sell it cheap. Lesson learned: Be weary of front end vibration with nothing wrong with the front end.
