tie rod/bearings
I'm having what is a tie rod and/or a wheel bearings problem with my car. There'* been a thumping noise when I turn my wheel to the left and sometimes right. It usually always happens, sometimes I can't hear it. It'* been happening for a few months. I know a few others have had this problem. Does anyone know how much of a problem this is (in terms of amount of money) if both the tie rod and wheel bearings (or anything else) need to be replaced?? I appreciate the help. Thanks.

Are you sure its bearings?
Once I had a engine mount problem and it led to the axle hitting. Look to see if the little pinched part on the axle bootstrap is smeared or worn.

I had a wheel bearings problem in the right front wheel and it made sort of a buzzing sound, no thumping.
And that was with only 44K miles on the car.
It sounds like something different with your car. :(

I had the same problem on the left side . But I changed the bearing and the ******* sound is still there so I changed the right side bearing and nothing SOOOOOOO I changed all the tie rods and nothing Son I'm assuming it'* the rear bearing , but I have no more money for that **** so it'll have to wait another 3 weeks . The cheapest price I found was 120.00 for the bearing and 40.00 for each tie rod (there are 4) plus the aliengment and labor . I'm getting a headache again!

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure if it'* bearings, I'm basically going on what a couple people have told me. I just hope whatever it is, it'* not the most expensive problem. Speedyguy, what year bonnie do you have? Did yours make a loud thumping noise when you turned the wheel both ways. For me it happens especially when I crank the wheel all the way to the right or left. I have a friend whose tie rod broke when he was driving. Hope THAT doesn't happen, though this has been going on for a while so I don't think it will. I'll check the axle out ASAP. :? Thanks

Might that "thumping" noise be more like a crunch. Go listen to it again.
I just read your post after posting mine. I have a similar problem and it is driving me crazy. Stay after the front end. If it sounds like it is coming from the front it probably is. Do you "feel" the thump or crunch in the steering wheel?
Bearings typically don't thump or crunch. They "whir", "hum", "grind", "clink" and "clank".

usually the noise that you are getting it caused by a suspension problem. a blown strut will cause a thumping noise as well as a bearing plate at the upper strut mount. also check the sway bar mounts.i have seen links break and cause this noise too. i seriously doubt that its a wheel bearing. one other thing to check, make sure that the lower control arm bolts are tight and the bushing are ok. hope this helped .
