Default Synthetic Oil Use

I've 50,000 miles on my 97 SSE, I want to start using synthetic oil. Is it worth it, what will it gain me. Any suggestions will be helpful, is there any preffered brand, etc.
Thanks

i suggest using Mobil 1 or Royal Purple. both are good. my dad works at the GM technical center and the powertrain people swear by both but say that Royal Purple is slightly better in their tests for longevity. you should be able to switch without much of a problem!

I use synthetic as well. Mobil One. It comes out in money about the same. But you save the labor. IF I were to used Dyno based oil, I would change every 3,000. With synthetic, I let the oil monitor do it'* job and it is about down to zero percent around 9,000 miles. There has been alot of data on the net showing quality synthetics are fine and breakdown minimal for this distance. With a cast iron block, I would personally change at 5000. We have a independent lab study posted here somewhere, I need to dig it out of the past and stick in into the Tech Info Section. Its shows Amsoil degraded the slowest, with Mobil One right behind it as #2.

I'm running Mobil One synthetic as well in both my Bonny and my F-150. I change it at 6,000 to 7,500 - depending on my mood and my wallet.

I run Mobil Clean 5000, best dino oil you can get, and only costs $11 for the 5 qt. jug at walmart. The 3800'* really don't need synthetic oil, especially since they rev so low. Lots of 3800'* out there with 200k+ miles that run the cheapest possible dino oil you can buy. There'* one guy on clubgp that has 240k on his heavily modded Grand Prix GT (running low 12'*), and he runs the oil they have at the dollar store with a wix filter. Even the autozone store brand oil is too good for him, lol.
